KABUL, Afghanistan – Two Afghan civilians were killed in an improvised explosive device attack insurgent caused in Pusht-e Rod district, Farah province, Jan. 11.
An Afghan National Army patrol responded to the scene of the blast to investigate the incident. During the exploitation of the blast site the Afghan Army patrol came under fire from numerous enemy positions. Afghan forces returned fire dispersing the insurgents.
Numerous insurgents were killed by International Security Assistance Force in southern and eastern Afghanistan over the past 24 hours.
In Helmand province, an ISAF patrol observed one insurgent displaying hostile action in Sangin district. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position with small arms fire, killing the insurgent.
In the same province, during a security operation, ISAF forces spotted several armed insurgents moving into a historical insurgent firing position in Musa Qal’ah district. After establishing positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position with anti-armour missiles, killing one insurgent and dispersing the others.
In Ghazni province, an ISAF air weapons team spotted several armed insurgents in Andar district. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position with heavy machine-gun fire and anti-armour missiles, killing several insurgents.
Later, from a nearby forward operating base, an ISAF patrol moved towards the enemy position and found a weapons cache consisting of three AK-47s, six fragmentation grenades and several loose 7.62 mm rounds.
In Kabul province, Kabul city police found a large weapons cache in a wrecked building in Qalah-e Bakhtiar village. The cache consisted of seven pistols, four AK-47s, three hand grenades, 13 AK-47 butt stocks, one chest rack, five boxes of 12.7 mm rounds, seven boxes of 7.62 mm rounds, 390 different types of small arms ammunition, 200 7,62 mm rounds and five radios.
Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the clearing operations. The weapons from the two provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
