KABUL, Afghanistan – The International Security Assistance Force confirmed the death of a mid-level Taliban leader during an Afghan National Security and ISAF operation in Nawah-ye Barakzai District, Helmand province, Jan. 14.
Multiple intelligence reports and tips from local citizens led the combined security force to a compound associated with Musa Kalim, a mid-level Taliban leader and improvised explosive device and suicide attack facilitator in Helmand province.
As the force arrived at the compound, Afghan security forces called-out to the occupants to allow them to exit the building peacefully. One man, two women and three children exited the building peacefully. The women and children were protected and after questioning, the man was detained.
As the force moved towards a small building within the compound, a man armed with an automatic weapon moved in their direction, threatening the joint security force. He posed a threat to the patrol and was killed. The man was later confirmed to be Musa Kalim.
Two additional men were detained as the security force continued to search the compound. After initial questioning by Afghan forces, the detainees were taken in for processing and further questioning.
