KABUL, Afghanistan – Numerous insurgents were killed and wounded by Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces during separate clearing and security operations in southern and eastern Afghanistan over the past 24 hours.
In Helmand province, an Afghan National Army and ISAF patrol was engaged by several insurgents hiding in a building in Musa Qal’ah District.
After gaining positive identification, coalition forces returned fire with anti-armour missiles and called for air support. The air weapons team on scene engaged the enemy position, destroying the building and killing two insurgents.
In Dangam District, Kunar province, an air weapons team in support of ground forces in the area declared an imminent threat when they spotted armed insurgents moving in a historical fighting location. After establishing positive identification, the air weapons team engaged the enemy position, killing numerous insurgents and dispersing the others.
Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF discovered several caches during separate clearing operations in southern and eastern Afghanistan today.
In Logar province, an ISAF patrol found a weapons cache hidden in Muhammad Aghah District. The cache consisted of 22 82 mm mortar rounds, two AK-47s, 38 fuses, four grenades, one radio, one artillery fuse and seven boxes of ammunition.
In Paktika, Helmand and Kandahar provinces, Afghan National Army and ISAF patrols found three large weapons and improvised explosive device component caches in Gomal, Dishu, Sangin and Arghandab Districts. The caches consisted of three AK-47s, 14 full AK-47 magazines , five rifles, 11,000 7.62 mm rounds, 250 12,7 mm rounds, 100 10 mm rounds, six hand grenades, one 60 mm mortar round, one 81 mm round, seven 40 mm rounds, two radios, three fuses, two chest racks, eight ammunition belts and 26 blasting caps.
The caches also contained two IEDs and one radio-command IED, explosives, 220 pounds (100 kilograms) of IED-making chemicals, one homemade detonator and detonation cord.
In Helmand province, an Afghan National Army and ISAF patrol found a narcotics cache in Garm Ser District consisting of 440 pounds (200 kg) of marijuana.
Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the clearing operations. The weapons, explosives and drugs from all the provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
