BAGHDAD – NATO Training Mission – Iraq Deputy Commander, Maj. Gen. Claudio Angelelli met with the Iraqi Air Force Commander Lt. Gen. Anwer Hamad Amin at the Iraqi Ministry of Defence, Jan. 17. The meeting took place, prior to MG Angelelli's forthcoming visit to the Iraqi Air Academy in Tikrit.

"The Iraqi Air Force is quickly making progress thanks to its cooperation with the USF-I,” said Angelelli.

"At this time the Iraqi Air Force is working in close relation with USF-I,” said Amin "but we must begin to lay the groundwork for a greater collaboration with NATO, in order to work within NATO standards."

"The Iraqi Air Force has grown much, in recent years thanks to the U.S. and our close relations with some neighbouring countries, such as Turkey and Jordan, but now - we have to start thinking about having a closer cooperation with NATO, to improve the overall standards of our technical staff, and to evaluate the courses that NATO can offer in its Centres of Excellence or in country.”

"NATO is considering how it will transform to have even greater cooperation with Iraq,” said Angelelli.

The purpose of the visit was to foster a better understanding of the needs and demands that the Iraqi Air Force will require at the next Joint Committee for Future Training, which is scheduled to take place in the next weeks.
