KABUL, Afghanistan – Several insurgents were killed by International Security Assistance Forces during a security operation in eastern Afghanistan over the past 24 hours.

In Laghman province, an ISAF patrol declared an imminent threat on several armed insurgents moving in a historical fighting location in Qarghah’i District and called for air support. After gaining positive identification, the air weapons team engaged the enemy position with anti-armor missiles, killing the insurgents.

In Helmand province, two insurgents were killed in an accidental blast while emplacing an improvised explosive device in Nawah-ye Barakzai District. Coalition forces responded to the scene of the blast to investigate the incident.

Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF also discovered several weapons caches in southern and eastern Afghanistan.

In Uruzgan province, an Afghan National Police and ISAF patrol found a weapons cache in Chorah District. The cache consisted of one AK47, three rocket-propelled grenades warheads, four RPG boosters, 120 12.7 mm rounds, 60 14.5 mm rounds and loose ammunition.

In Logar province, an ISAF patrol discovered a weapons cache in Baraki Barak District consisting of three mortar fuses, homemade explosives and several IED-making components.

In Helmand province, an Afghan National Police patrol discovered a weapons cache in Now Zad District, consisting of 16 82 mm recoilless rifle rounds, 50 mortar fuses and 54 cans of 7.62 mm rounds.

In Zabul province, a group of Afghan civilians brought a weapons cache to the National Directorate of Security of Qalat District. The cache consisted of 120 pounds (54 kilograms) of homemade explosives, two mines, 30 pounds (27 kg) and 29 fuses.

In Kapisa province, an Afghan civilian turned in a large weapons cache to an ISAF forward operating base in Tagab province Jan. 20. The cache consisted of 19 82 mm mortar rounds, 12 81 mm mortar rounds, IED-making chemicals and propellant for rockets.

“The turn-in of the weapons, IED-making components and explosives disrupt insurgent activities and prevent further loss of innocent lives,” said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. “But we ask Afghans to provide us with tips that can lead Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF to safely retrieve this dangerous ordnance”

Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the clearing operations. The weapons, IED making components and chemicals from all the provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
