CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – A United Service Organization facility opened here, Jan. 25.
The new USO is open to all U.S. military personnel to relax and escape from the pressure of operations. The tent in which the USO is housed offers a movie theater, video games, computers, Internet, phones and a plethora of movie titles.
“Today we had a grand opening of the USO for all the (service members) here at Leatherneck,” said Tim Kerr, USO programs coordinator. “Were going to try and stay open 24 hours a day granted that we have volunteers to help us out.”
Kerr, who spent 14 months working as the duty manager for the USO in Basra, Iraq, said he can help service members by setting up events and helping with supplies and prizes.
Even though the USO is now operational, it has been in the planning stages for many months.
“This is a long time coming and Marines don’t prioritize things like morale, welfare and recreation, and that’s what we have done for the last 11 months,” said Col. Lori Reynolds, I Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group Forward commanding officer. “So its taken us a long time to get to the point where we had the time, energy and the right people to take care of (service members) in the right way.”
Kerr echoed the colonel’s comments and added a few words of his own.
“I’m just glad to be here, and come and see us,” said Kerr. “We’re here until everyone goes home.”
