    KABUL, Afghanistan – Numerous insurgents were killed during separate clearing and security operations in southern and eastern Afghanistan today.

    In Helmand province, coalition forces spotted armed insurgents moving toward a historical fighting location in Musa Qal’ah District. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces engaged the insurgents with anti-armor missiles and called for air support. An air weapons team supporting ground forces engaged the enemy position, killing the insurgents.

    In the same province, an International Security Assistance Force patrol observed one insurgent emplacing an improvised explosive device in Sangin District. After establishing positive identification, coalition forces engaged with small-arms fire, killing the insurgent.

    In Helmand and Kunar, two ISAF installations were attacked by insurgents with small-arms and indirect fire. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position with accurate mortar fire and anti-armor missiles, killing several insurgents and dispersing the others.

    Also today, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF discovered several caches in eastern and southern Afghanistan.

    In Bamyan, Uruzgan, Kandahar and Helmand provinces, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF found several weapons and IED-making components in Shaybar, Chorah, Arghandab, Panjwa’I, Shah Wali Kot, Marjah and Reg-e Khan Neshin Districts. The caches consisted of 10 anti-personnel mines, 17 Chinese rockets, 25 107 mm rocket fuses, 68 RPGs, 57 RPG boosters, seven 82 mm mortar rounds, 10 81 mm mortar rounds,100 14.5 mm rounds, 100 12.7 mm rounds, 150 20-25 mm rounds, three 107 mm rockets, one chest rack and explosives.

    Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the clearing operations. The weapons and IED-making components from all the provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
