    KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces confiscated more than 16,000 rounds of insurgent ammunition and killed numerous insurgents in the past 24 hours.

    Patrols operating in the south found 16,500 7.62 mm rounds and other weapons while conducting operations Helmand and Kandahar provinces.

    In Jalalabad City, Nangarhar province, armed men entered the Kabul Bank and detonated suicide explosive devices today, wounding more than 15 civilians, according to Afghan reporting sources.

    In other International Security Assistance Force news throughout Afghanistan:

    South

    ISAF service members at a compound in Sangin District, Helmand province observed numerous insurgents north and south of their position talking on radios Feb. 19. After gaining positive identification of the insurgent positions, the coalition troops engaged, killing several insurgents. Later, the ISAF troops observed more insurgents positioning in the area with weapons. After positive identification, coalition forces continued firing on the various insurgent positions, resulting in several more insurgents being killed.

    An ISAF security force conducted an operation in Nad ‘Ali District, Helmand province overnight, recovering 10,000 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, 16 rocket-propelled grenade boosters, 14 RPG rounds, 13 fake Afghan National Police identification cards, five AK-47s and an RPG launcher.

    Also in Helmand, an ISAF patrol utilizing a metal detector found a buried weapons cache. The cache consisted of 2,000 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, a pistol and a pistol magazine in Marjah District today

    An Afghan and ISAF combined patrol operating in Zharay District, Kandahar province today found a weapons cache that included 2,500 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, 10 grenade bodies, 11 AK-47 magazines, along with numerous weapons and ammunition. In the Panjwa’I District of the province, a separate combined patrol found 2,000 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, two AK-47s with 50 empty magazines, three rocket-propelled grenade rounds, 328 feet (100 meters) of detonation cord, 300 AA batteries and other various electronic components.

    Also in Kandahar province, a combined patrol found nine directional fragmentation charges, three four-gallon jugs of homemade explosives, three pressure plates and weapons in Kandahar District today.

    ISAF confirmed today that Sadam, an improvised explosive device expert, was killed during a joint Afghan national security and coalition operation in Nawah-ye Barakzai District, Helmand province, Feb. 17. Several armed men were killed and one man was detained during the operation. Sadam was directly involved in the facilitation, construction and placement of IEDs.
