MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP S.D. BUTLER, OKINAWA, Japan – Humanitarian Assistance Survey Teams made up of Marines and sailors from III Marine Expeditionary Force conducted surveys in the city of Higashimatsushima in Miyagi Prefecture, March 22, to determine the extent of damages from a tsunami that struck after a 9.0-magnitude earthquake March 11.
HAS teams, made up of civil-military operations specialists, medical officers and engineers from both the U.S. and Japan, are equipped to assess the structural integrity of bridges, buildings and roads and recommend courses of action for repair and replacement. They also provide limited medical support and work with Japan Self-Defense Force personnel to distribute humanitarian aid and relief supplies to disaster-stricken areas.
The name Tomodachi means “friends” in Japanese, and was chosen by Japan. The Government of Japan is taking the lead on all relief efforts, and the U.S. military is providing aid and support as requested by Japan.
