CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – Forty-three Afghan National Security Forces troops graduated from the Joint Security Academy Southwest here, March 31.
A class of 18 Afghan soldiers graduated the trainers trainee's course and 25 others graduated from the explosive hazardous readiness course.
In support of the troop’s recent accomplishment, guests of honor included Maj. Gen. John A. Toolan, commanding general of Regional Command Southwest, Afghan National Army Brig. Gen. Mohammad Sadiq and ANA Col. Shawali Zazai.
“I’m really happy to participate in this ceremony. As you know, these troops received training in Kabul, but it was not good training. I’m really thankful of the coalition forces who provide these facilities,” Zazai said. “I really appreciate the Marine leaders having these courses. I really appreciate and am thankful for everyone who has helped our army.”
The ANSF men who graduated from the trainer trainee's course went through eight weeks of training by British troops on the basic warrior skills required to be a recruit instructor, said Royal Air Force Flight Lt. Greg Kevan, who is with Regional Military Training Center Southwest.
After graduation, these 18 men will receive a short break before they receive their first wave of 700 recruits.
Kevan said, “They’ve been really positive through the entire course and they definitely have their work cut out for them. But I think they’ll do well.”
The other 25 men who graduated from the explosive hazardous readiness course spent four weeks at JSAS learning how to properly seek and detonate explosives.
“These men are going to search for and destroy [improvised explosive devices],” said Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Ron Ameika, who was in charge of the course. “It’s basically like a counter IED course, but it’s their job.”
Both the troop’s instructors and the men who graduated are eager to see their newfound knowledge put to use.
“I’m very happy today,” said ANA Sgt. Sayed Hussain, who graduated from the trainer trainee's course. “I’m proud of myself and am looking forward to helping more students in the future.”
