FORT HOOD, Texas - The Department of Defense announced, April 6, the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation New Dawn.
Sgt. Christian A. Garcia, 30, of San Diego, Ariz., died April 2 in Babil province, Iraq, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his position with indirect fire.
Garcia joined the military in June 1999 as a quartermaster and chemical equipment repairer and was assigned to the Maintenance Troop, Regimental Support Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, since August 2010.
Garcia deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from December 2004 to December 2005 and from November 2007 to January 2009.
Garcia's awards and decorations include two Army Commendation Medals, four Army Achievement Medals, two Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with campaign stars, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officers Professional Development Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbons, NATO medal, and Driver and Mechanic Badge for Mechanics.
