KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition combined forces killed several insurgents during a security operation in Bal Chiragh district, Faryab province, today.
During the operation, an insurgent killed three children and wounded four other women and children. Afghan and coalition forces separated the women and children and cordoned them into a courtyard as initial combat broke out; however, one of the insurgents subsequently pointed a weapon through an adjacent window and then threw a hand grenade into the courtyard area, resulting in the deaths and injuries of Afghan civilians, as well as the wounding of Afghan and coalition security force members.
The security force was targeting the appointed head of the Taliban Commission for Faryab province, as well as a Taliban leader and advisor to the Taliban military commander in Faryab.
The operation at the compound was based on multiple intelligence source reports of insurgent activity in the area. Security forces isolated the area before initiating a call out, asking Taliban forces to surrender.
Security forces provided immediate medical care for the women and children, who were later transported to a medical facility. Five Afghan and coalition force members were also wounded in the operation.
“This is yet another example of insurgents wilfully murdering Afghan civilians,” said Rear Adm. Hal Pittman, ISAF deputy chief of staff for communication. “This kind of blatant disregard for the lives of innocent Afghans is reprehensible. Working with our Afghan partners, we will continue our relentless pursuit of those who would prevent peace in Afghanistan.”
