    KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces killed one insurgent and detained several others during a deliberate clearance operation in Ghormach District, Faryab province, yesterday.

    The security force targeted a Taliban safe haven in Arzanak village, which is associated with improvised explosive device activity and cache sites. The purpose of the operation was to disrupt Taliban operations in an area that has historically been associated with the senior leader and head of the Taliban shura council in Ghormach District, Faryab province.

    During the operation, the combined force cleared multiple compounds, and were engaged by multiple armed insurgents. After establishing positive identification, the combined force engaged the enemy positions, killing one insurgent and detaining several others. There were no civilian casualties or collateral damage reported during the operation.

    South

    Afghan and coalition forces captured a Taliban leader along with several of his associates during a security operation in Zhari District, Kandahar province, yesterday.

    The Taliban leader coordinated and distributed IED materials throughout the district. He also conducted reconnaissance for his associates.

    Intelligence tips led the combined security force to the leader’s suspected compound. After ensuring the safety of all women and children, the security force searched the area. The security force identified and detained the Taliban leader after interviewing local residents. Three of his associates were also detained for further questioning. The operation was conducted without shots fired and there were no reports of collateral damage.

    In Sha Joy District, Zabul province, Afghan and coalition forces detained a suspected Taliban leader and several suspected insurgents during a security operation to disrupt Taliban network cells, yesterday.

    The leader directs fighters and facilitators, coordinating Taliban operations in the district.

    Multiple intelligence sources led the security force to a compound in the district to search for the leader. The security force secured a series of buildings and interviewed local citizens before detaining the suspected leader and several others. There were no civilian casualties or collateral damage reported during the operation.

    ISAF, today, confirmed the capture of two Taliban leaders. The first is a Taliban Chiriki assassination cell leader who operated in Zhari District, Kandahar province. He was captured during an operation in Dand District, Kandahar province, April 13.

    The second is a Taliban leader and facilitator involved in complex attack planning against coalition forces along Highway 1. He was captured during an operation in Sha Joy District, Zabul province, April 13.

    East

    Afghan and coalition forces detained numerous suspected insurgents while searching for a Haqqani network facilitator during a security operation in Zadran District, Paktiya province, yesterday.

    The facilitator coordinates supply movements and provides direct support to insurgent operations. He is currently involved in the planning and execution of an upcoming Haqqani attack.

    Multiple intelligence sources led the combined force to a compound suspected of insurgent activity involving the facilitator. The security force isolated and secured the compound.

    After calling all occupants to exit the buildings, the security force searched the area and interviewed local residents. Numerous suspected insurgents were detained. Security forces ensured the safety of women and children throughout the search, and no shots were fired.

    ISAF, today, confirmed the identity of an al Qaida leader killed during an air strike.

    The leader, by the name of Waqas, was killed during a precision air strike in Dangnam District, Kunar province, April 14.

    Waqas was a Pakistani al Qaida leader operating in Kunar, who coordinated attacks against coalition forces. He was associated with another Pakistan-based senior al Qaida leader and together they conducted training for members throughout the province, as well as weapons procurement.

    In Bak district, Khost province, Afghan and coalition forces captured a Haqqani network facilitator during a security operation yesterday.

    The Haqqani facilitator is responsible for facilitating the emplacement of IEDs and coordinating direct attacks against Afghan National Army and coalition forces in the Sabari and Bak Districts of Khost province.

    The combined security force targeted a compound in the district based on numerous reports of insurgent activity in the area. After isolating the compound, Afghan forces called all occupants to exit the compound peacefully.

    Once the safety and security of all women and children was established, the security force commenced its search. The facilitator was identified and detained as a result of interviews with local residents. One suspected insurgent was also detained for further questioning.

    No shots were fired throughout the operation and no civilians were harmed.

    In Bar Kunar District, Kunar province, coalition forces killed numerous insurgents yesterday.

    A coalition forces patrol conducting a route clearance operation, received small-arms fire from a group of insurgents. After gaining positive identification, the patrol requested close-air support and engaged the enemy position, killing numerous insurgents.
