KABUL, Afghanistan – The International Security Assistance Force confirmed today a senior Taliban leader was killed during operations this week.
Maulawi Afzal, the senior Taliban leader leading and controlling all operations in Nangarhar province, was killed during a security operation in Chaparhar district, April 3.
He is one of more than 20 insurgent leaders combined Afghan and coalition forces have captured or killed in the province this year. Security forces have targeted the area on several occasions since January, detaining more than 110 insurgents.

Afghan and coalition forces detained two insurgents and recovered 15,432 pounds (7,000 kilograms) of ammonium nitrate during an operation in Baraki Barak district, Logar province, May 5. The fertilizer was destroyed by security forces.
