    KABUL, Afghanistan – Two insurgents were killed and numerous men were detained during a combined Afghan and coalition operation targeting an insurgent leader in Marjah District, Helmand province, yesterday.

    The target has plans for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Marjeh and Nad ‘Ali Districts. He also manufactures and places roadside bombs in an attempt to target Afghan and coalition forces.

    The two insurgents were killed when they attempted to engage the combined force during the search of a building associated with the target.

    A search of the building turned up 11 pounds (5 kilograms) of opium, one AK-47 rifle and associated ammunition, one grenade and various explosive device components.

    The detainees were taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.

    South

    A combined Afghan and coalition force patrol discovered a weapons cache, today, consisting of 20 metal pressure plates and eight jugs of homemade explosives. The components were destroyed on site.

    A combined Afghan and coalition vehicle interdiction operation discovered 815 pounds (370 kgs) of dry opium in Garm Ser District, Helmand province, yesterday. During the operation, an individual in a vehicle engaged the force with small-arms fire. The force returned fire, killing the occupant. The narcotics were found in the vehicle and later safely destroyed.

    In Marjeh District, Helmand province, today, Afghan and coalition forces found 28 7.62 mm rounds and six grenades.
