KABUL, Afghanistan – A combined Afghan and coalition security force was engaged by multiple foreign fighters, resulting in numerous killed and two detained during a security operation in Qalat district, Zabul province yesterday.

The combined security force conducted the security operation in order to capture a Taliban facilitator in the district.

The facilitator coordinates movement of weapons, improvised explosive devices, and IED materials to other insurgents in the district.

After extensive intelligence gathering, the security force targeted the facilitator’s suspected compound in the district. While conducting the search, the force was engaged by multiple groups of insurgents. The force responded to enemy fire, killing numerous insurgents.

Two additional insurgents were detained after admitting involvement with the others.

Questioning of the two detainees and others on the target led to the discovery that the force had interrupted a Taliban operational meeting.

The force completed the search by safely destroying multiple weapons including a PKM machine gun, a grenade, and multiple chest racks that were found during the operation. In addition to the weapons, the force found passports from several different countries indicating the presence of multiple foreign fighters.

Throughout the entire operation, the force was careful to ensure the safety of all women and children.
