KABUL, Afghanistan – A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani Network leader and several of his associates during a security operation in Dzadran District, Paktiya province yesterday.
The leader was a senior advisor for the insurgent network. He was responsible for logistics and communications for a major portion of Haqqani operations in the province. The leader is the brother of the third highest ranking Haqqani leader, and though not a commander or fighter, he was intimately involved with the Haqqani command structure and tactical operations. Additionally, he recruited young men and suicide bombers for the Haqqani Network.
After thorough intelligence analysis that lasted over a week, the combined security force tracked the Haqqani leader to an area in Dzadran District. The force cleared several compounds and conducted interviews with residents. Based on their reports, the force was able to locate the insurgent leader and apprehend him on sight.
Additionally, through initial investigation the force discovered several individuals who had ties to Haqqani activity in the area. They were all detained with the insurgent leader for further questioning.
The entire operation was completed peacefully, with no harm to civilians.
