KABUL, Afghanistan – More than five insurgents were killed after they attempted to attack a combined Afghan and coalition force operating in Qadis District, Badghis, yesterday.
The unit reported receiving small-arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire while conducting a security patrol. After gaining positive identification, the unit returned fire and called for air support.
An air weapons team in the area dropped multiple ordnance rounds on several different positions after positively identifying armed insurgents, including a compound where insurgents were armed with AK-47s, anti-aircraft weapons and RPGs.
Initial reports indicate there were no civilian casualties.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban facilitator and one of his associates in Marjah District, Helmand province, yesterday. The facilitator was in charge of acquiring equipment and weapons for Taliban leaders operating in the district. He coordinated travel for injured fighters and worked closely with Taliban medical facilitators.
The Afghan-led security force tracked the leader throughout the day to a compound. After confirming his location, the security force commenced their search. While isolating the area, an Afghan member of the force called for all occupants to exit, allowing for the security of the women and children. The force searched the area and identified the facilitator. Additionally, they discovered one of his associates. Both men were detained. No shots were fired during the operation.
A combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a drugs cache in Garm Ser District, Helmand province, yesterday, consisting of 1,146 pounds (520 kilograms) of dry opium. The drugs were destroyed by security forces.
East
A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one suspected insurgent while searching for a Taliban leader in Chak-e Wardak District, Wardak province, yesterday. The leader coordinates and participates in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. Additionally, he coordinates training for subordinate Taliban insurgents.
The Afghan-led security force detained the individual while searching a compound associated with the leader. The security force questioned and took him into custody after determining he had ties to insurgent activity. No shots were fired during the night operation and no civilians were harmed.
In Qarghah’i District, Laghman province, a combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a weapons cache yesterday consisting of ten 82 mm rockets. The weapons were seized by security forces.
