    KABUL, Afghanistan – A combined Afghan and coalition force patrol targeted a mid-level insurgent leader during an operation in Daychopan District, Zabul province, yesterday.

    The patrol was attacked with heavy machine gun fire by a group of insurgents firing from an elevated firing position. Several insurgents were killed when an ISAF air weapons team and close air support assets returned fire on the insurgent firing position, killing the attackers.

    Several men were detained during the operation and taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.

    In Nahr-e Saraj District, Helmand province a coalition force patrol killed several insurgents during a security operation, today.

    The coalition force patrol was engaged by insurgents with small arms fire. The patrol positively identified the insurgents’ position and returned fire with assistance of an air weapon team killing several insurgents.

    No civilians were harmed during the operation.

    Also in Nahr-e Saraj District, a coalition patrol discovered a weapons cache today. The cache consisted of 81 detonators, 44 pressure plates, one spider charge, four radios, 13 remote control packs, 99 pounds (45 kilograms) of homemade explosives, one detonation cord and 30 homemade fuses.

    All weapons were seized by security forces.

    A coalition force patrol discovered a weapons cache consisting of 800 12.7 mm rounds today in Khwajah ‘Omari District, Ghazni province.

    All the weapons were safely destroyed by security forces.
