ILOPANGO, El Salvador – The sniper events for Fuerzas Comando 2011 began today at Shangallo Range, Ilopango, El Salvador.
Fuerzas Comando, established in 2004, is a U.S. Southern Command-sponsored special operations skills competition and senior leader seminar which is conducted annually in Central and Southern America and the Caribbean.
There are 19 teams competing in the competition, each one with sniper and assault elements.
Today’s events were “Stalking” and “Range Estimation,” both taking place simultaneously at different locations on the range.
The events consisted of two-member teams who were expected to work together toward the acquisition of their target under strict time constraints.
In the “Stalk” event, competitors relied heavily on cover and concealment to traverse 1700 meters and acquire their target, unseen.
The competitors also displayed their abilities in gauging time, distance, and precision in the “Range Estimation” event. The sniper teams performed a distance estimation of 20 targets.
Scores are still being tallied, and it is anyone’s contest.
Tomorrow, the sniper events will continue with, “Snaps and Movers,” and a night shoot.
Fuerzas Comando officially ends, June 23.
