KABUL, Afghanistan – A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed two insurgents and detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader in Sar-e Pul District, Sar-e Pul province, yesterday.
The leader is the Taliban appointed governing official for attacks in Balkh province. He organizes attacks against Afghan security forces and coordinates roadside bomb acquisition, construction and emplacement throughout the province.
While moving into position, the Afghan-led security force noticed several individuals attempting to evade. The force moved to detain two insurgents who fled to a cave. The force unsuccessfully called for the men to come out peacefully. After observing the men move into a hostile position, the two were engaged and killed.
The force also pursued and detained several additional individuals and after initial questioning, the force determined they had suspected ties to the Taliban. No women or children were harmed during the operation.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during a security operation in Archi District, Kunduz province, yesterday. The target of the search was a Taliban leader who directs a roadside bomb and suicide attack network within the district. Intelligence reports led the force to a compound in the district. The force searched the area and detained the individuals for further questioning.
South
A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban facilitator during a security operation in Dand District, Kandahar province, yesterday. The facilitator transported weapons and coordinated attacks in the Kandahar City area. The security force received several reports leading them to the facilitator’s location, where he was identified and detained during initial questioning.
Also in Kandahar, a combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban facilitator during an overnight security operation in Zharay District yesterday. The facilitator was associated with the production and facilitation of roadside bombs in Zharay and Panjwa’i Districts.
Multiple intelligence reports enabled the Afghan-led force to track the facilitator to his compound in the district. Afghan members of the force searched the compound, where they found and detained the facilitator.
A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader in Tarnek wa Jaldak District, Zabul province, yesterday. The leader facilitates and conducts roadside bomb attacks against Afghan and coalition forces along Highway 1 in Qalat and Shah Joy Districts. The security force followed several tips to a compound in the district. During a subsequent search, the force identified and detained the suspected insurgents for further questioning.
Also in Zabul, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban leader and several suspected insurgents in Qalat District yesterday. The leader was responsible for several roadside bomb and direct attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. Additionally, he built bombs, coordinated attacks and collected money for Taliban commanders in the area.
The Afghan-led security force set out to capture the leader at his compound in Qalat District. After arriving, the force called for the occupants to exit the buildings. The Afghan members of the force then interviewed residents and based on information provided, they identified and detained the leader along with several suspected insurgents.
In Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a senior Taliban leader in Nahr-e Saraj District during a nighttime search yesterday. The leader was associated with the Taliban military commission and worked detainee releases for associated insurgents.
The Afghan-led security force found him and several other suspected insurgents at a compound in the district. The leader and the suspected insurgents were detained based on interview with residents.
East
A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during a security operation targeting a senior al-Qaida facilitator in Gelan District, Ghazni province, yesterday. The facilitator, who typically operates in Pakistan, helps plan terrorist operations and moves fighters, money and materials into Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The Afghan-led security force searched for the facilitator at a compound where they identified five individuals with suspected ties to al-Qaida. The men were transported with the force for additional questioning.
During a separate search in Sabari District, Khost province, a combined security force detained one suspected insurgent while searching for a Haqqani network facilitator. The targeted facilitator participates in direct attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, and he plays a role in the movement of equipment from Pakistan to insurgents in the district.
While searching the area they also discovered several grenades, roadside bomb pressure plates, bomb initiators, detonation cord and multiple rounds of ammunition.
