KABUL, Afghanistan – A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed two Haqqani insurgents and detained numerous suspected insurgents during a security operation in Zurmat District, Paktika province, yesterday.
The target of the operation was a Haqqani leader who plans attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. Additionally, he maneuvers fighters and weapons from Pakistan into Paktika province.
The Afghan-led security force was searching for the Haqqani leader when they were attacked by multiple insurgents, armed with AK-47 rifles, upon arriving on location. Shortly after launching the attack, the armed men retreated to the targeted compound.
The security force isolated the compound and called for all occupants to exit. While conducting the call-out, they were again attacked by armed insurgents from inside the compound. Responding to enemy fire, the force engaged the insurgents, killing two.
During the engagement, four Afghan civilians received minor shrapnel wounds from insurgent grenades. All four were treated by the security force on site and three were transported to a medical facility for follow-up care.
Completing the operation, the security force detained numerous associated individuals for further questioning.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader in Char Bulak District, Balkh province, yesterday. The leader is responsible for conducting small arms and roadside bomb attacks against Afghan security forces.
The Afghan-led security force searched for the leader at a compound in the district. While at the compound, the force interviewed individuals they suspected as Taliban insurgents and detained two men for further questioning.

In Zabul province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader and two suspected insurgents during a security operation in Qalat District yesterday. The leader was responsible for both facilitation and attack coordination within Qalat District. He has moved weapons and communications equipment for fellow insurgents, and has conducted several attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
He was captured at his compound along with two of his associates. The force was led there after receiving multiple reports from citizens. No women or children were harmed in the night operation.
A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader and several suspected insurgents during a security operation in Nahr-e Saraj District, Helmand province, yesterday. The leader procured and facilitated weapons, including roadside bombs, for Taliban commanders in the area.
Following several intelligence sources, the Afghan-led security force searched a compound where they discovered several suspected insurgents. The force detained several men for additional questioning and it was later confirmed the leader was among those detained. Additionally, while searching the area, the security force discovered and safely destroyed several pounds of opium.
