KABUL, Afghanistan – U.S. forces stationed at Headquarters International Security Assistance Force celebrated Independence Day the best way they knew how – deployed military style.
The day-long celebration was kicked off with a five-kilometer run, followed by dodgeball, a strongman contest, water balloon toss, poker tournament and a massive cookout featuring everything from steak to apple pie – all of which Afghans and NATO forces also participated in.
Celebrating freedom together regardless of what country is called home was a special moment for many of the hundreds of attendees.
At one point during the cookout a Macedonian solider picked up one of the small American flags on display and asked if he could keep it, it was a touching moment, said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Tammy Thompson, lead coordinator of the event.
“I am happy we could share Independence Day with everyone,” said Thompson.
The festivities were put together by a team of U.S. Air Force airmen who were lauded by U.S. Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of ISAF and U.S. Forces Afghanistan, for their efforts.
