KABUL, Afghanistan – During a security operation in Zharay District, Kandahar province, an Afghan-led security force detained a Taliban facilitator and attack planner, along with several of his associates. The security force also confiscated over 4,000 pounds (1,814 kilograms) of marijuana and 2,000 pounds (907 kgs) of opium.
The facilitator operated between Kandahar City and Chaman, Pakistan. Several reports indicate he was responsible for the movement of explosives and roadside bomb components, and also planned attacks against Afghan security forces in Kandahar City.

In Qalat District, Zabul province, an Afghan-led security force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader, yesterday. The leader works directly for the senior Taliban governing official for Zabul province, and has coordinated attacks against Afghan civilians and Afghan National Police forces.
In Musa Qalah District, Helmand province, a combined security operation led to the detention of several suspected insurgents during a search for a Taliban leader, yesterday. The leader is a senior operative in Sangin District, responsible for coordinating roadside bomb attacks and providing military guidance for attack planning.
While conducting the search, the security force was approached by an individual displaying hostile intent. The individual was carrying what was believed to be a grenade, prompting the force to fire at him after they identified an imminent threat. He died as a result. After conducting an initial assessment, the security force discovered the individual was an unarmed local national.
Additionally, two local females received minor leg wounds during the operation. They were both treated on-site and transported by the security force to a medical facility for routine follow-up care.The security force also detained several suspected Taliban insurgents for questioning and confiscated 50 pounds (23 kgs) of opium.
In Khwajah Ghar District, Takhar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one suspected insurgent during a security search for an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan facilitator yesterday. The facilitator is an explosives expert who trains suicide bombers and assists in their attacks.
In Washer District, Helmand province, a combined Afghan National Security and ISAF patrol seized a quantity of narcotics and foreign currency during an operation, yesterday. The operation seized 273 pounds (124 kgs) of heroin, 181,000 Iranian Rial ($17,000 U.S. dollars) and detained two men. The narcotics were safely destroyed on site. The detainees were taken, by Afghan authorities, for processing and further questioning.
In Now Zad District, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition patrol seized a large quantity of narcotics and foreign currency during an operation yesterday.
The operation seized 1,852 pounds (840 kgs) of wet opium, 66 pounds (30 kgs) of dry opium, 10.6 million Pakistani Rupees ($123,143 U.S. dollars), one AK-47 rifle, one pistol and associated ammunition. The narcotics were safely destroyed on site.
In Maiwand District, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition patrol discovered a drug cache, today. The cache consisted of 13 pounds (six kgs) of heroin, 66 pounds (30 kgs) of opium and 81 pounds (37 kgs) of hashish. All the drugs were safely destroyed on site by security forces.
In Marjeh District, Helmand province today, a combined Afghan and coalition force discovered and seized a drug cache consisting of 348 pounds (158 kgs) of poppy seeds. The seeds will be destroyed at a later date.
