KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan-led security force killed several insurgents during a security operation targeting a Haqqani network leader in Zurmat District, Paktiya province, yesterday.
The targeted leader plans attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces and maneuvers fighters and weapons from Pakistan.
During the search, the security force was fired at by several insurgents armed with AK-47 assault rifles. The force returned fire, killing them. Two suspected insurgents were detained following the firefight.

In Kajaki District, Helmand province, an Afghan-led security force detained numerous suspected insurgents during a clearance operation targeting a Taliban safe haven yesterday. The security force cleared an area adjacent to the Azan village, which is a known enemy narcotics trafficking hub. Several Taliban members, facilitators and narcotics traffickers are based in this location.
An Afghan-led security force detained numerous suspected insurgents during a security operation targeting a Taliban facilitator in Maiwand District, Kandahar province, yesterday. The facilitator is responsible for the movement and distribution of weapons in the district.
East
In Terayzai District, Khost province, an Afghan-led security force detained a Haqqani network leader and two of his associates during a security operation. The leader was responsible for coordinating roadside bomb attacks in the district, as well as supplying and storing roadside bomb making material for insurgents in the area.
Finally, an Afghan-led security force detained one suspected insurgent while searching for a Taliban facilitator in Muqor District, Ghazni province, yesterday. The facilitator is a prominent weapons dealer in the region and is responsible for movement of roadside bomb components, ammunition and weapons.
