KABUL, Afghanistan – A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed a Taliban leader and one suspected insurgent during a security operation in Baraki Barak District, Logar province, yesterday.
Sheen Abdul Rahman was a Taliban leader who directed more than 70 fighters to conduct roadside bomb, landmine and direct attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces.
The security force located Rahman at a compound in the district after receiving several reports of insurgent activity in the area.
While clearing a building, the security force encountered one suspected insurgent, armed with a pistol. Assessing an immediate threat, the security force fired at the individual, killing him.
Afghan members of the combined force located Rahman, where he was armed with an AK-47 and chest rack. After he presented a threat, he was engaged and killed.

In Sayad District, Sar-e Pul province, coalition forces killed numerous Taliban insurgents with precision air strikes yesterday. Earlier in the day, a coalition security team was notified of an insurgent attack against local Afghan forces. After assessing the threat the security force called for precision air strikes, killing the individuals.
Following the strike, local leaders were quick to express appreciation for the coalition’s response to the Taliban threat.
South
During a security operation in Nahr-e Saraj, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force destroyed two unstable explosive ordnance facilities and detained two suspected insurgents yesterday.
The security force discovered the facilities while conducting a security search in the area. Determining the facilities were a threat to local Afghans, the security force opted to destroy the buildings after ensuring no civilians were in the area.
In addition, the force detained two suspected Taliban insurgents for further questioning.
The target of the operation was a Taliban facilitator involved in the movement of suicide bombs, roadside bombs, weapons and ammunition. He also is responsible for improvised explosive device manufacturing and provides direction to fighters for attack preparation.
Also in Helmand, a combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a large drug cache at a vehicle security checkpoint in Dishu District yesterday. The patrol seized a total of 1,980 pounds (900 kgs) of opium, and the narcotics were safely destroyed on-site.
Finally, in Dand District, Kandahar province, an Afghan and coalition combined security force detained one suspected insurgent while searching for a Taliban facilitator yesterday. The facilitator conducts roadside bomb attacks against Afghan National Security forces in Kandahar city.
