    KABUL, Afghanistan – A combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered an anti-personnel mine inside a mosque during a security operation in Zharay District, Kandahar province, yesterday.

    The combined security force initiated a search for a Taliban facilitator, which led them to a mosque. Afghan members of the force entered the mosque to search for the facilitator and, while searching the area, discovered the anti-personnel mine which Taliban insurgents had emplaced on a shelf.

    In respect for the mosque, the combined security force pulled away from the area and made arrangements with local leaders to identify a way to properly neutralize the mine without harming the mosque. Coordination is still ongoing.

    The security force completed the operation, detaining multiple suspected insurgents.

    The target of the operation was a roadside bomb facilitator and attack planner operating in Kandahar City. In addition, he has supplied weapons and roadside bomb components for attacks against Afghan government officials.

    North

    Coalition security forces killed a senior Taliban leader with a precision air strike in Dowlatabad District, Faryab province, yesterday.

    Mullah Nasir was a commission chief and the second-in-charge for Taliban operations in Jowzjan province. He was targeted with the air strike due to his role in attacks on Afghan National Security Force checkpoints, and transporting supplies and weapons throughout the region.

    According to reports, he also intimidated Afghan civilians by killing villagers under the ruse of being spies, levying taxes against them, burning their homes, and selling their livestock. He also threatened to kill those who supported the Afghan government or Afghan security forces.

    After ensuring no civilians were in the area, the security force called for the air strike which resulted in the death of the Taliban leader.

    South

    An Afghan and coalition combined security force detained two suspected insurgent during a security operation targeting a Taliban facilitator in Nahr-e Siraj District, Helmand province, yesterday.

    The facilitator is a cross-provincial weapons smuggler. He travels from Spin Boldak to Nahr-e Siraj, transporting weapons collected from Pakistan.

    In Tarin Kot District, Uruzgan province, a combined Afghan and coalition force patrol discovered a weapons cache, yesterday. The cache consisted of 550 rounds of ammunition, 30 magazines, 20 mortar rounds, rifle components and a pair of binoculars. All items were seized by the patrol and will be destroyed.

    East

    In Terayzai District, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents yesterday during a security search for a Haqqani network facilitator.

    The facilitator is involved in the distribution of weapons and construction of roadside bombs.

    Finally, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several insurgents with suspected ties to the Taliban during a security operation in Wali Muhammad Shahid Khugyani District, Ghazni province, yesterday.

    The target of this operation was a Taliban facilitator who constructs roadside bombs, prepares attack execution, coordinates insurgent movements, and provides direct support to insurgent operations.
