KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition combined security force killed two Haqqani network insurgents and detained seven suspected insurgents during a security operation in Zurmat District, Paktiya province.
The target of this operation was a Haqqani leader who conducts, coordinates, and directs roadside bomb and indirect fire attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces in the district.
While containing the targeted location, the combined security force received heavy machine gun fire from the two insurgents who were barricaded nearby. The force responded with small-arms fire, which escalated as the insurgents continued with an onslaught of heavy fire. Finally, as a force protection measure, the security team called in airstrikes to neutralize the insurgents barricaded in the compound. Two insurgents were killed as a result. After the engagement, the security force confiscated two Russian PK machine guns from the deceased insurgents.
Reports from locals, following the engagement, indicated the insurgents had been repeatedly harassing citizens throughout the day. Additionally, they added, the insurgents forcibly removed the owner and his family from the compound, which the insurgents later used as a barricaded fighting position.

An Afghan and coalition combined security force captured a Taliban facilitator and one suspected insurgent during a security operation in Kandahar City, Kandahar province.
The facilitator is responsible for roadside bomb placements targeting Afghan National Security Forces in Kandahar City and Arghandab District.
In Arghandab District, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained three suspected insurgents during a security operation targeting a Taliban leader.
The leader is a tactical-level Taliban chief, responsible for roadside bomb placements and attack coordination for a local cell in the area. The security force also confiscated 40 pounds (18 kilograms) of opium while at the targeted compound.
A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one individual with suspected ties to the Taliban during a search for an insurgent leader in Kajaki District, Helmand province.
The leader is the Taliban appointed governing official for operations in Sangin District. He is directly involved with the planning and execution of asymmetric attacks against Afghan and coalitions security forces.
East
In Sabari District, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani network leader and one of his associates during a security search. The detained leader was responsible for directing roadside bomb and direct-action attacks in the district.
