NEW YORK – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, has awarded two contracts worth approximately $20.4 million for the construction of two new facilities at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey. The contracts went to two local small businesses in Southampton, N.J., near the base.

Ranco Construction of Southampton, N.Y., was awarded a $13.7 million contract to design and construct a new dormitory. The new, modern three-story facility will be approximately 42,000 square feet and will house 120 airmen. It will include a geothermal heating and cooling system design in keeping with the Army’s sustainability goals.

Construction will begin on the dormitory once the contractor has finished a detailed design for the facility and construction on the project is expected to be complete in early 2013.

Marco Builders, also of Southampton, was awarded a $6.7 million contract to construct a new Base Operations/Command Post Facility at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst. The new approximately 23,000 square foot facility will serve as a nerve center for operations at the base. It will include administrative offices, aircrew briefing areas and space for controllers handling air traffic.

Construction of the Base Operations/Command Post Facility begins this month and is expected to be complete in fall 2012.

“These two projects will provide great benefits to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst by improving Airmen living accommodations and enhancing operations with the construction of a new and integrated, state-of-the-art Base Operations/Command Post,” said New York District Commander Col. John R. Boulé. “This $20 million in projects will also greatly benefit the community by creating new jobs and boosting the local economy.”

As part of the contracts, both facilities must meet environmental requirements to be certified as at least LEED Silver as per the U.S. Green Buildings Council guidelines.
