    KABUL, Afghanistan – A combined Afghan and International Security Assistance Force patrol killed one insurgent and detained two suspected insurgents during an operation in Qarah Bagh district, Ghazni province, Aug. 24.

    The detainees were taken in by Afghan security forces for further questioning.

    In addition, the patrol seized and safely destroyed two grenades and a quantity of small arms and ammunition.

    Capital

    A combined Afghan and coalition force patrol detained two suspected insurgents during an operation targeting an insurgent leader in Kabul district, Kabul province, Aug. 24. The leader is responsible for numerous improvised explosive device and complex attacks against ANSF and coalition forces. The detainees were taken in by Afghan Security Forces for further questioning.

    South

    In Sangin district, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition force patrol discovered a large cache of bomb and IED-making materials today. The cache consisted of two 105mm shells each filled with nine pounds (4 kgs) of unknown bulk explosives, 50 pounds (25kgs) of nitrogen-based powder, 55 pounds (25 kgs) of citric acid monohydrate powder, 55 pound (25kg) bags of monosodium glutamate powder, six hand grenades, 30 blasting caps, one crosswire pressure plate, 100 feet of detonation cord, one chest rack, three antennas and one radio. A bag of an unknown powder was also recovered. All items were seized and safely destroyed.

    A combined and coalition force patrol killed numerous insurgents during an operation in Khas Uruzgan district, Uruzgan province, Aug. 24. The insurgents were killed after they fired at the patrol with rocket propelled grenades and small-arms fire. Following the firefight, the patrol discovered a quantity of small arms and ammunition, which were safely destroyed.
