KABUL, Afghanistan — A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed a key affiliate of the al-Qaida network during a security operation in Jalalabad District, Nangarhar province, yesterday.
Sabar Lal was an insurgent leader responsible for attacks and financing insurgent operations in the Pech District, Kunar province. He was in contact with several senior al-Qaida members throughout Kunar and Pakistan.
The security force located Sabar Lal at a compound in Jalalabad District after receiving information from local citizens. He emerged from the building with an AK-47 assault rifle and was killed.
Several suspected insurgents were also taken into custody during the security operation.
Coalition security forces have captured or killed more than 40 al-Qaida insurgents in eastern Afghanistan this year.

North
A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation that resulted in the death of several insurgents and one local female in Chahar Bolak District, Balkh province, yesterday. Several insurgents, armed with a machine gun and AK-47 assault rifles, were identified, engaged and killed by the security force.
The force pursued additional suspected insurgents to a nearby compound. During a search of the building, the force observed what appeared to be a hostile individual. Assessing a threat, the force fired, resulting in the death of a fourth individual. It was later discovered the person was an unarmed female.
Shortly following the incident, ISAF representatives notified Afghan officials about the incident and requested they initiate an investigation. Members of the security force also conducted a meeting with area leaders.
The focus of the operation was to capture a known Taliban leader responsible for distributing weapons, facilitating suicide bombers and conducting attacks against local security members and Afghan National Security Forces.
Additionally, multiple suspected insurgents were detained during the operation.
South
In Nahr-e Saraj District, Hemland province, an Afghan and coalition combined security force detained several insurgents yesterday and seized 60 pounds (27 kilograms) of heroin during a security operation. The security force was searching for a Taliban leader responsible for coordinating attacks against Afghan National Security Forces.
East
A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one suspected insurgent while searching for a Haqqani network facilitator in Nerkh District, Wardak province, yesterday. The facilitator is responsible for car bomb attacks in the region.
In Sabari District, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several insurgents yesterday during a security search for a Haqqani network leader. The leader directs a roadside bomb cell in the region and coordinates high-profile attacks against the Afghan National Army. During the operation, the security force confiscated and safely destroyed multiple roadside bomb components and a grenade. No civilians were harmed during this operation.
Finally, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents in Andar District, Ghazni province, while searching for a Haqqani network facilitator yesterday. The facilitator is an attack planner involved with leaders from different insurgent organizations that were attempting to plan a car bomb attack in Kabul.
