GHAZNI PROVINCE, Afghanistan — U.S. Army Sgt. John Alden Lyons, of Seaside Park, N.J., was killed Oct. 26 by small arms fire while conducting a route clearance patrol in Ghazni province, eastern Afghanistan.
Lyons graduated Central Regional High School, afterwards working as a carpenter for several years. He then attended Rutgers University, where he studied political science for three years.
In December 2008, Lyons enlisted in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer. He was assigned to the 572nd Mobility Augmentation Company, Fort Hood, Texas.
Lyons deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in December 2010. He served at Forward Operating Base Frontenac where he received a lateral promotion from specialist to corporal; he continued his duties as a truck commander and dismount team leader.
Lyons’ awards and decorations include the Purple Heart (Posthumous), Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO ISAF Medal, and the Combat Action Badge. Sgt. Lyons was promoted to sergeant posthumously.
Lyons is survived by his parents, brother, and sister.
