MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - With many Marines accessing websites like Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, My Pay, Marine Online, Marines.mil and so on, the risk of leaking information vital to operational security is high. To reduce the threat, the Marine Corps offers a secure social media platform called eMarine that links a unit’s page to many pages vital for Marines.
Family readiness officers are their unit’s administrator for their eMarine site. In order to ensure operational security of the site, FROs are required to approve all members joining the site not listed in the unit’s roster.
“The unit page can only be accessed by approved people,” said Robin Schoolfield, Marine Aircraft Group 26 family readiness officer. “Marines can invite up to five people to join under them, but it should be someone in their Marine Online contacts, so it’s documented the person is associated with them.”
Marines are encouraged to invite spouses, parents and extended family members to join their unit’s site.
“There are required pages to assist Marines and their family on every site,” Schoolfield said. “That way all the information they may need can be accessed from anywhere.”
According to Marine Administrative Message 499/11, the Implementation of eMarine Organizational Communication Tool, eMarine sites are expected to be operational by February 2012.
“This is a one-stop-shop for all the information and links Marines could need,” said Jennifer Anderson, the Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron FRO. “It also eliminates the waste of inbound Marines to receive a bundle of information in the mail since they can access the information they need.”
Marines can access forms and information in the ‘download center’ under the resources tab.
Some of the resources available on a unit page may include listings of volunteer opportunities, information packets for new Marines and unit newsletters, Schoolfield said.
Other resources the command can use to determine the environment of a unit include polls and forums.
“Users cannot change their username when they transfer units and it will show on any posts in a forum, so choose something universal and appropriate,” Schoolfield cautioned.
One example is a former operations officer who used his unit name followed by OpsO as his login, and despite a permanent change of station and billet, is stuck with the username.
Family readiness officers throughout Marine Corps Air Station New River, urge Marines to check the site out and register under their unit. For those with temporary assigned duties or permanent change of station orders, Marines are authorized to join up to two unit’s eMarine sites.
“We are here to support your family readiness and this is just one more tool you can use,” Anderson said. “Help us help you and keep the operational security information secure.”
By February 2012, Headquarters Marine Corps aims to have all unit Facebook sites and unit Marines.mil sites consolidated and transitioned to eMarine.
