CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - The Sergeants Major Association of San Diego county held its 39th annual Christmas dinner and Toys for Tots party at Camp Pendleton’s South Mesa Club, Dec. 10.
The new, unwrapped gifts were presented to Capt. Patrick Newton, Marine Corps Reserve, Company A, 4th Tank Battalion, who will personally deliver the donations to a local Toys for Tots program.
“We had about 1,700 toys before this weeks donations,” said Walter Valentine, retired Marine sergeant major and special programs coordinator with Personal and Professional Development Program of Camp Pendleton. “This year is starting off strong, and will only continue to get stronger since we won’t stop collecting donations until Dec. 20.”
After all donations have been accepted, Debra Anderson, the coordinator of the Camp Pendleton, North San Diego County, and South West Riverside Toys for Tots program for 39 years, will sort and distribute the toys to non-profit organizations and churches throughout all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
“This year we received toy requests from 132 different organizations,” said Anderson.
During last year’s event, association members and their guests embraced the true spirit of Christmas and the joy of giving by donating more than 3,000 new, unwrapped toys.
“We must assure our retired Marines are still highly respected, not only for contribution they made, but also for contributions they continue to make,” according to the Sergeants Major Association of San Diego County newsletter.
The organization’s main objective is to continue the esprit de corps, fellowship, brotherhood, and camaraderie shared during their time served as active duty Marines.
