KHOWST PROVINCE, Afghanistan— Super Bowl fever was alive and well deep in the interior of Afghanistan, Feb. 6. The Camp Clark dining facility, known throughout Regional Command East for going above and beyond for its soldiers, threw an elaborate Super Bowl party to rival anything in the states.
Head chef George Piccardi, a native of Diamond Bar, Cali., used his own funds to buy some incredible door prizes that included signed Joe Namth, John Elway and Steve Young jerseys, autographed footballs, a San Francisco 49ers helmet signed by Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, and even a signed photograph of Madonna.
Since the Afghanistan time zone is 10-and-a-half hours ahead of the United States, it was a late night affair, beginning at 2 a.m., and ending after sunrise. Soldiers dined on savory chicken wings, triple-layer chocolate cake and roast beef, and sipped non-alcoholic beer and coffee.
New England Patriots and New York Giants fans were well represented, with devotees of the Giants walking out into the morning light, tired and happy and Patriots fans just tired.
