KABUL, Afghanistan - A joint investigation team comprised of members of the ISAF staff and representatives of the Afghan government visited the Detention Facility in Parwan, Feb. 22, to examine the circumstances surrounding the disposal of religious materials there Sunday night, Feb. 19.
"This visit is an extremely important first step in resolving this issue, and I am grateful to President Karzai for his support in sending this group of representatives to assist us," said Gen. John R. Allen, commander, International Security Assistance Force. "The only way we can demonstrate our sincerity to the people and government of Afghanistan is through our actions, and we are already taking measures to ensure this never happens again."
Afghan representatives included members of a ulema that will report directly to the President of Afghanistan. The ISAF team included a representative of the ISAF Commander and staff from the detention facility.
"The purpose of the investigation is to discover the truth surrounding the events which resulted in this incident," said Allen. "We are determined to ascertain the facts, and take all actions necessary to ensure this never happens again."
