CAMP BUEHRING, Kuwait – “Being spiritually fit to fight is an essential element to being ready to accomplish your mission,” is Air Force Chaplain Lt. Col. Harp’s opinion on the mission of spiritual fitness.
With a vision and the help of soldiers from the 230th Engineer Battalion and the 188th Engineer Company, Camp Buehring opened the doors to begin accomplishing this mission on Feb. 17.
“The mission of the center is to nurture the spiritual health of the warriors in the [area of operations],” said Harp.
Although the Spiritual Life Center is designed to assist soldiers in relaxing and recuperate their spiritual needs, Harp emphasized that the mission is different from that of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Center next door.
“To have fun and escape the stress of the day is a great thing,” Harp said about the difference in missions. “But, our mission is not that of the MWR. Both of these organizations have essential missions that they accomplish in an outstanding manner.”
The building was built by soldiers for soldiers, but will be operated and managed by the chaplains on Camp Buehring.
“Today we say thank you … to the chaplains,” said Lt. Col. Snider, commander of the Base Support Battalion – North. “They will carry the heart of the facility for without the chaplains who will make the building into a Spiritual Fitness Center it would just be another floor, set of wall and a roof, to the facilitators who provide the purchasing power and commitment of assets.”
With the waterfall fountain on in the front of the room, there was a relaxed feeling when the ceremony concluded.
“Today is a wonderful day for a small ceremony, for a small building that will have a big, very long term positive and lasting impact on soldiers,” Snider said concluding the ceremony.
