KABUL, Afghanistan – A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to capture a Taliban leader in Muqer district, Ghazni province, today.
The Taliban leader planned and supervised roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces throughout the district. He also provided weapons and ammunition to insurgents in the area.
As the security force approached the Taliban leader’s suspected location, two armed insurgents fled into a nearby mosque. The security force pursued the insurgents and the Afghan soldiers moved to the entrance of the mosque compound. No coalition troops entered the compound.
As the Afghan soldiers conducted a call out, the insurgents fired on the force from within the mosque compound. The security force returned fire in self-defense. Two insurgents were detained as a result of the operation.

In Now Zad district, Helmand province, an Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to capture a senior Taliban leader today. The leader directs roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces throughout the district. He is also suspected of directing insurgent attempts to infiltrate Afghan National Security Forces for assassinations against Afghan officials, Afghan troops and coalition forces. The security force detained two suspected insurgents and seized 30 pounds (13.6 kilograms) of opium as a result of this operation.
An Afghan-led security force conducted an operation to capture a Taliban facilitator in Tarnek wa Jaldak district, Zabul province, today. The facilitator supplies weapons, ammunition, and equipment to insurgents in Kandahar province for attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces. He also coordinates the movement of suicide bombers. The security force detained two suspected insurgents.
East
In Sayyidabad district, Wardak province, an Afghan and coalition security force captured an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan facilitator during an operation today. The facilitator, along with senior IMU leaders in the area, was planning future large-scale attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Kabul, Wardak and Logar districts. The security force killed one insurgent and detained two additional insurgents.
An Afghan-led security force conducted an operation to capture a Haqqani leader in Bak district, Khost province, today. The leader organized roadside bombings and other attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces throughout the district. The security force detained several suspected insurgents as a result of the operation.
Finally, in Nadir Shah Kot district, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to capture a Haqqani leader today. The leader plans and directs attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout the province. He also organizes the movement of weapons and ammunition from Pakistan to insurgents operating in Afghanistan. The security force detained several suspected insurgents as a result of the operation.
