    KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and coalition security force killed Taliban leader Mir Jan Lala during a security operation in Helmand province Monday.

    Mir Jan Lala was responsible for providing intelligence to Taliban senior leadership for planning attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

    In other International Security Assistance Force news throughout Afghanistan:

    South

    An ISAF patrol seized nearly 600 kilograms (1,320 pounds) of homemade explosives and ammonium nitrate, along with improvised explosive device initiators and components, during a joint air and ground patrol in Zabul province Sunday. The patrol destroyed all cache items at the location.

    East

    An Afghan and coalition force detained an insurgent during a security operation in search of a Haqqani senior leader in Paktiya province today. During the operation, the security force also seized multiple firearms.
