By Staff Sgt. Tanya Green, 3rd Sustainment Brigade, 3rd Inf. Div. Public Affairs
FORT STEWART, Ga.— Over the past 10 years, the U.S. military has been at war, and over the past 10 years, Third Sustainment Brigade Soldiers have supported those war-fighters as they protect and defend America’s freedoms.
Now, after casing their brigade colors at Fort Stewart’s Cottrell Field, Nov. 19, the ‘Providers,’ will continue to support the war-fighters—only this time, the Headquarters element is headed to Afghanistan.
“About this time 10 years ago, when we were known as the 3rd Infantry Division Support Command, the DISCOM cased it’s colors and deployed to Kuwait and later supported the Marne Division’s historic invasion of Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom I,” said Col. Ron Novack, 3rd Sustainment Brigade commander. “Today, the 3rd Sustainment Brigade Headquarters finds itself carrying its colors once again for a combat deployment, an unprecedented fifth time in the past decade.”
This time, the location for the 3rd Sustainment Brigade Headquarters is to Kandahar, Afghanistan, where about 250 Soldiers will provide support like fuel, transportation, equipment, food and water to other servicemembers throughout Regional Command-South, Southwest and West.
Though this is the first deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom for the Headquarters element, the Provider Brigade is no stranger to Afghanistan.
“We have been deploying battalion headquarters, companies, detachments, teams and platoons in support Operation Enduring Freedom,” Novack said. “We have deployed all three movement control teams…today, we have Charlie Detachment, 24th Finance Company deployed to Regional Command-South and the 396th Transportation Company to Regional Command-East.”
The commander said more elements of the brigade will deploy to Afghanistan over the next year.
“Yes, the Providers know Afghanistan,” he said during his speech after he and Command Sgt. Maj. Forbes Daniels cased the brigade colors. “I am proud of our Soldiers and their selfless service and steadfast commitment to fighting our nation’s wars and want to say ‘thank you’.”
The 3rd Sustainment Brigade Headquarters is slated to deploy for nine months under the Joint Sustainment Command-Afghanistan commanded by the 3rd Expeditionary Command from Fort Knox, Ky.
“We look forward to continuing to pump the logistical ‘life-blood’ into the Marne Division and all U.S. and Coalition Forces and civilians throughout Regional Command South, Southwest and West,” Novack said. We look forward to becoming a part of the Joint Sustainment Command and we look forward to the challenges that lay ahead.”
