[2] Armed with Science 51: Game-Induced Enhancements in Adult 'Fluid Int This edition features a discussion with Dr. Ray Perez, program officer with the Office of Naval Research, about how video games can impact adult "fluid intelligence," the fundamental ability to reason and solve problems in novel contexts. When people think of the U.S. Navy, they may visualize ships, planes, and other military hardware -- not necessarily neuroscience or cognitive research. Scientists studying brain function point to a growing body of research suggesting that the brain continues to learn and improve cognitive function with age. Dr. Perez, who is contributing to a growing body of research on how the brain functions, will discuss the Navy's interest in "brain plasticity" and "fluid intelligence" and how today's neuroscientific research may literally change the way we think 10 years from now.

[2] Armed with Science 41: Quantum Ghost Imaging This edition features Ron Meyers, Army Research Laboratory physicist, will discussing a new way of seeing objects that were once hidden from sight. He and his team are credited in taking quantum ghost imaging from a physics curiosity and making it a discipline with many applications. Through computing the quantum effect of objects, this "ghost image" has the ability to appear not by actually seeing it, but by calculating the light patterns coming from it. Using virtually any light source from a fluorescent bulb, lasers or even the sun, quantum ghost imaging can give a clearer depiction of objects by eliminating atmospheric conditions that conventional imaging can't. This revolutionary basic research is only at the tip of its iceberg, and Meyers and his quantum team are working to move it into tangible applications. Its uses could possibly range from satellite imaging, x-ray imaging with less radiation, biometrics and other defense applications.
