Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System Units from the North Carolina Air National Guard, 145th Airlift Wing ( MAFFS 8) and the California Air National Guard, 146th Airlift Wing, Channel Islands (MAFFS 6 ) are activated to assist the Federal and State Forest Service and CALFIRE in containing several fires along central California. The activation began mid-August and is projected to last until beginning to mid-September. With the assistance of the Forest Service, BLM, CALFIRE, and the United States Air National Guard, the MAFFS units are able to lay retardant along fire lines that assist the ground firefighters with containing the wildfires.
