Col. Pete Mapes began the in depth study of U.S. Air Force and Navy fighter attack aircraft mishaps while stationed at the Air Force Research Laboratory in 2003. His analysis made the case for automatic recovery to prevent Controlled Flight Into Terrain and resulted in the Air Force moving the technology from an unfunded option to the number one requirement for fighter/attack aircraft. A member of the Aviation Safety Technology Working Group of the Defense Safety Oversight Council, Mapes then undertook the first DoD-wide analysis of helicopter mishaps. He partnered with two other officers who were in student status and developed the most extensive safety analysis ever produced in DoD. This analysis has been used extensively both by the DSOC and in reports requested by the Hill and the Department of the Secretary of Defense. Mapes will explain how the science of epidemiology can be used to examine Aviation Safety Mishap Data and arrive at conclusions that can prevent aircraft mishaps and save lives.
