Marines with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit continued their first unit-wide training exercise at Fort Picket, Va., this week. The Camp Lejeune, N.C.,-based unit traveled more than 230 miles with all their gear to conduct block one and two training for their six-month pre-deployment workup.
While at Fort Picket, the Marines and Sailors will fire nearly every weapon in their inventory and complete other annual training requirements such as foot and vehicle maneuvers, urban operations, hand grenade practice, breaching and demolitions and several other events.
Capt. Nicholas Gregson, action officer for the Pickett training, said the skills mastered here will lead to more complex events for MEU Marines.
"The training we're conducting here is the baseline for all combat skills that any marine possesses and is expected to be able to perform under pressure ... This sets the baseline for the marines combat training over the next few months. "
This includes amphibious squadron MEU integrated training from the ships of the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group, on which the MEU will deploy in the fall.
