Few may know that Forward Operating Base Fenty near Jalalabad in eastern Afghanistan was the launch point of one of Operation Enduring Freedom’s most storied missions, the May 2011 raid that killed 9-11 mastermind Osama Bin Laden. In recognition of the one-year anniversary of the raid we talk to Fenty pilot CW2 William Haynes, who operates CH-47F (Chinooks). Haynes and his crew fly in the air space that the Bin Laden raid team used. He talks about the challenges of conducting night missions in mountainous terrain.
