SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Coast Guard Search and Rescue controllers in the command center at Sector Sault Ste. Marie heard a man hail the Coast Guard on a VHF-FM marine radio at 11:48 a.m., Aug. 4, 2011, stating his boat, the sailing vessel Tringa, was sinking, but the SAR controllers were never able to establish communication with him to ask his location. The SAR controllers were able to use Rescue 21, brand new technology there, to quickly locate the sailboat near Drummond Island, Mich., ending in a safe trip home for the man.
