A good Samaritan who overheard this radio call for help rescued six people who were aboard a 37-foot sport fishing boat that caught fire and begin sinking, forcing them into a life raft, 35 miles off St. Augustine, Florida, Thursday, May 22, 2014. The Coast Guard encourages all boaters to use a VHF-FM marine radio as a primary means of communicating distress since radios are far more reliable than cell phones in the marine environment and distress calls may be heard by other nearby boaters who may be able to render assistance before rescue crews arrive.
