Well before takeoff and long after landing a variety of backshops and airmen ensure all components of an aircraft are safe and fully functional. But, it’s not just the aircraft with equipment needing maintenance. Senior Airman BreeAnn Sachs gives us an inside look at the Airmen responsible for all things aircrew.
Reporter: WHEN A PILOT’S FLYING AT THIRTY-THOUSAND FEET THE LAST THING THEY SHOULD WORRY ABOUT IS THEIR HELMET FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. FOR AIR FORCE PILOTS THERE’S A CAREER FIELD DEDICATED TO ENSURING THEY ARE FULLY TRAINED, AND THEIR EQUIPMENT IS READY TO FLY. SENIOR AIRMAN THOMAS DEVEREAUX, OF THE FIFTY-FOURTH OPERATIONS SUPPORT SQUADRON, DESCRIBES SOME OF THE CHALLENGES HE FACES AS AN AIR CREW FLIGHT EQUIPMENT JOURNEYMAN.
SrA Thomas Devereaux: The most challenging part of this job in particular would have to be fitting the gear up to the pilots themselves. Every piece of gear these guys put on has to be custom fit to the enth-degree, if one thing is off then it can drastically affect their flight performance which can affect the mission. We work on everything ranging from parachutes, to survival kits, flotation devices, to harnesses, helmets, masks, and g-suits.
Reporter: DESPITE THE MANY CHALLENGES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE CAREER FIELD, AIRMAN DEVEREAUX MENTIONED SEEING HIS DIRECT MISSION IMPACT PROVES VERY REWARDING.
SrA Thomas Devereaux: We do directly impact whether that person will survive the air crash or any incident what-so-ever. When we come to work every day we have to be on our game 100%. Otherwise god forbid something will happen, and then that person will not come home at the end of the day.
Reporter: AIRMAN DEVEREAUX ADDED, IN ADDITION TO MANAGING AIRCREW FLIGHT AND EMERGENCY SAFETY EQUIPMENT, HE AND HIS FELLOW AIRMEN ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TRAINING ASSOCIATED WITH THEIR GEAR. AIRCREW FLIGHT EQUIPMENT TECHNICIANS INSTRUCT AIRCREW MEMBERS ON THE PURPOSE, OPERATIONS, CARE, AND PROPER USE OF THEIR EQUIPMENT, ENSURE THEY ARE WEAPONS-QUALIFIED, AND READY TO DEPLOY. REPORTING FROM HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE NEW MEXICO I’M SENIOR AIRMAN BREEANN SACHS.
