PELELIU, Republic of Palau -- U.S. Army Soldiers maintain World War II monuments on remote island in the Pacific. The Civic Action Team from Palau makes the hour-long boat ride to the tiny island to maintain several U.S. and Japanese World War II monuments at the sites where U.S. Marines and soldiers died in 1944. The team is responsible for cutting the brush and basic upkeep of the markers. Amy Forsythe reports from Peleliu about this long-standing program.

    SUGGESTED LEAD:
It's one the most remote islands in the Pacific....where the U.S. fought the Japanese over an airfield. Now, U.S. service members travel by boat there about once a month to maintain the World War Two monuments.

    SUGGESTED TAG:
The Civic Action Team mission first began in 1969 when U.S. Navy Seabees first arrived. Seabees will replace the Army Engineers once again in February as the mission continues with six-month rotations.
