I'm Sergeant Drew Tech with your Marine Minute.
Calling all sports fans, the 8th annual Marine Corps Trials, hosted by the Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment, will take place for the first time at Camp Lejeune, N.C., March 15-24. The Marine Corps Trials is a Paralympic-style adaptive sports event involving more than 200 wounded, ill or injured Marines, Sailors, veterans and international competitors. The Trials promote recovery and rehabilitation through adaptive sports participation and develops camaraderie among recovering service members and veterans. It also serves as the primary venue to select Marine Corps participants for the DoD Warrior Games. The event is open to the public. Those interested in volunteering can register through the USO of North Carolina.
On this day in Marine Corps history in 1945, five days into the Battle of Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines raised the American flag over Mount Suribachi. Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal was there to take what became one of the most iconic war photos in American history.
